According to Major League Baseball insider Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Los Angeles Dodgers and two-time World Series champion manager Dave Roberts are closing in on a record-breaking contract extension.
Talks of an extension between the two parties were rumored all winter and confirmed by Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes and President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman, who stated they’d have the discussion after the player side of the offseason was finished.
Fast-forward to today, when the Dodgers are less than a week away from heading to Tokyo, Japan, to kick off the 2025 Major League Baseball regular season against the Chicago Cubs, and a deal is now being reported as close.
While the numbers of the possible deal have not been reported, it is safe to assume it’ll break the current record-breaking agreement, which was a 5-year, $40 million contract to Craig Counsell of the Chicago Cubs, who left the Milwaukee Brewers after the 2023 season.
It makes sense why Roberts would demand and exceed that total, as the current Dodgers skipper has a combined 851-507 record as a manager, giving him a .627 winning percentage. That’s the highest winning percentage of any manager in MLB history, with at least 1000 games managed in his career, translating to approximately 102 wins in a 162-game season.
With Cactus League play set to conclude for the Dodgers next week, a deal is likely to get worked out before the team heads overseas to start their quest to become the first back-to-back World Series champions in over twenty years.
