According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners are the latest teams to have shown interest in Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman and former top prospect Gavin Lux this winter.
This is the second time this winter that Lux’s name has been rumored in trade talk. The first rumor was just last month, and Lux potentially was involved in the failed Devin Williams trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, which J. P. Hoornstra of Newsweek reported.
According to Ragazzo’s sources, the New York Yankees, who have a hole in their infield with long-time second baseman Gleyber Torres leaving in free agency for the Detroit Tigers, showed interest in Lux several weeks ago but did not articulate the extent of the interest.
Ragazzo later explains that the Seattle Mariners have been more aggressive in pursuing the infielder, which is also something I have heard in the industry.
After the Dodgers’ recent splurge on Korean utility infielder Hyeseong Kim, many question what it meant for current second baseman Gavin Lux, as his role seems more cloudy than ever.
However, Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes was quick to dispel that talk, stating that the Dodgers’ current middle infield plan still involves Mookie Betts at shortstop and Gavin Lux at second base, with Kim being more of a utility player.
With the Dodgers already including Lux in one massive trade package this winter, I find it hard they would turn away any potential trade talk in the future, especially with the current logjam on the positive side of the Dodgers.
Lux, 27, is still under two cheap years of control and is only estimated to earn under $3 million this season as he enters his second year of arbitration.
A once former top prospect who has yet to live up to the bill due to multiple inconsistencies and a massive leg/knee injury in 2023, the Dodgers may be finally willing to move on.
