Dodgers Recap: LA Wins Thriller Against Arizona In Back-And-Forth Contest
Game 39, 5/9/2025: Dodgers 14, Diamondbacks 11

PHOENIX — Well, that was fun. In what looked like it could be a pitching duel between Roki Sasaki and Eduardo Rodriguez, the game turned into an all-out slugfest.
The Dodgers, who lost a tough one to the Diamondbacks last night, were looking to get off to a better start today. It didn’t happen. After Los Angeles scratched across a run in the top of the first, both Ketel Marte and Eugenio Suarez hit home runs to give Arizona a 3-1 lead. But in the top of the second, LA bounced back. Kiké Hernandez homered, and Shohei Ohtani doubled in the tying run.
And in the third, the Dodgers appeared to blow it wide open. They scored five runs in the frame, and Mookie Betts, Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman all made outs. Up 8-3, they looked to be in command of the game. Then came the fifth inning. With Arizona scratching across a run in the fourth to make it a four-run game, Anthony Banda entered. For the second straight night, Dodgers pitching gave up a grand slam. Tonight, it was Anthony Banda surrendering one to Lourdes Gurriel Jr, who tied it at 8.
Luis Garcia walked in a run in the 6th, and in the eighth, Marte homered for the second time, and Randal Grichuk went yard as well. 11-8 Snakes. But in the ninth, the Dodgers got four straight hits off of Arizona’s closer Kevin Ginkel to tie it at 11. Then, Shohei Ohtani arrived. He blasted a three-run shot to right to give Los Angeles a 14-11 lead. Tanner Scott closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth.
On a night where it looked like LA could slip to second in the NL West, they held their ground and tied this four game set with Arizona. Tomorrow, it’ll be Dustin May pitching for the Dodgers at 5:10 PT, against the Diamondbacks’ Corbin Burnes.
