Dodgers History: How the Dodgers Became the Dodgers: The Origin Story Behind the Name

If you didn’t know, today is an important day in Dodger History. Today marks the 94th birthday of the name Dodgers, a name that has so much history tied to it. The historic franchise has had players of the likes of Sandy Koufax, Jackie Robinson, Fernando Valenzuela, and now, Shohei Ohtani. These players are rooted in a historic franchise that today celebrates its 94th anniversary for its name: the Dodgers.

Prior to 1932, the Dodgers had a bunch of different names for the Brooklyn Club. Some people called them the Bridegrooms due to the fact that multiple players had gotten married. Other names for the club included Superbas, named after a popular circus act, and the Robins, a tribute to Wilbert Robinson who had a very successful tenure as the manager.

In 1932, the Dodgers decided they needed a permanent name. The first option was the Kings, named after King County, which is where Brooklyn resided. However, the owners had a much better name up their sleeve, the Dodgers, named after the people who dodged trolley cars in Brooklyn.

Now, the Dodgers are a global icon not just in Brooklyn but also in Los Angeles, becoming one of the most iconic clubs in the world. As we commemorate the 94th birthday of the name Dodgers, we can appreciate the amount of history and joy the team has brought us, not just in the past two years, but all time.
