Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw and Will Smith Make 2026 WBC Debuts

Clayton Kershaw and Will Smith Lead Dodgers Presence in WBC

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Team USA pasted the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Shocking, I know. Through their first two tune-up games, they are looking like one of those carnival strongmen who used to go town-to-town challenging local guys to see if they could last a minute in the ring with them. Inevitably, the local would be flat on the mat and the strongman would ride out of town with the local dude’s cash (and maybe his girlfriend). So what I’m saying is that the game wasn’t particularly close.

However, it did feature a couple of Dodger names that we thought we should tell you about.

First, the good. Catcher Will Smith caught the game on Wednesday after Cal Raleigh made the first start on Tuesday. And Smith continues to swing a good bat this spring. In this one, he smashed a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning, one of five dingers hit by the Americans in this one (Judge, Bregman, Goldschmidt and Buxton had the others).

Then, the not-so-great. Clayton Kershaw came in to pitch the bottom of the fourth, and got lit up a little. Mickey Moniak led off the inning with a homer, and before manager Mark DeRosa came to collect him, Kersh had gotten two outs, but had walked a guy and threw a wild pitch. Maybe he’ll fare better against great Britain.

Anyhoo, the game ending up as a 14-4 shellacking of the Rockies. Good luck in Houston, Will and Clayton!
