Dodgers News: LA Strength Coach Travis Smith Goes Viral Hype-Man for Team USA

Why Travis Smith is the Dodgers' Secret Weapon

PHOENIX, AZ — You don’t have to be around the Dodgers long to know strength and conditioning coach Travis Smith. He’s a bundle of energy, and a guy who many Dodgers look to for tips on how to stay on the field for the entire season. And, now, you can add one more job title to his resume: viral superstar.

Dugout Rah-Rah

A video has been making the rounds of Smith, who’s been with the Dodgers for more than a decade, pacing the dugout with words of encouragement for Team USA (as if they need encouragement to beat the Rockies!). Nevertheless, in what looks like a pregame situation, Smith paces the dugout handing out praise and high fives to whoever needs them. And, in the clips funniest segment, he has to leap into the air to high five Aaron Judge, who, at 6’7″ towers over pretty much everybody in the dugout.

Travis Smith is one of those behind-the-scenes Dodgers staffers who makes a real difference over a long season. As a Major League Strength and Conditioning Coach, he helps build the club’s training, nutrition, recovery, and day-to-day routines. Basically all the unglamorous work that keeps big-league bodies moving right. He’s earned that trust the hard way, too. He’s come up through the organization from minor-league strength and conditioning roles (2012–2015), to assistant/strength coordinator work (2016–2018). And then, finally into his current spot with the big club.

Smith’s Training Pedigree

Smith’s résumé matches the results: massage therapy credentials, a master’s in Applied Exercise Science from Concordia University Chicago, a bachelor’s from Taylor University—where he also played four years of defensive back—and a track record of teaching the craft, including presenting to the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and running a strength and conditioning mentorship in Okinawa focused on movement assessment, athlete development, and smart, system-based training. In a sport where durability is half the battle, the Dodgers are lucky to have someone like Travis Smith helping set the standard.

And the world just got a peek as to why.
