Dodgers Drop Game to Phillies in 16 Grueling Innings
How to recap a 16-inning game? Two innings shy of a double-header, Tuesday night’s (and part of Wednesday morning’s if you were watching on the east coast) loss to Philadelphia ground on for nearly six hours, ending with Enrique Hernandez pitching. Hernandez gave up the winning runs in the bottom of the 16th with two on and one out on a three-run walk-off HR from Trevor Plouffe.
Rather than recap the marathon game or question Dave Robert’s decision to essentially throw the game when there was still Caleb Ferguson and starting pitchers available, well-knowing that Arizona would be within a half a game of first if L.A. lost… well, let’s just throw out some fun facts regarding Hernandez’s pitching debut:
- Kikè is the first player since Babe Ruth in 1921 to play infield, outfield and pitch, while allowing three runs in the same game.
- Kikè is the first position player to pitch for the Dodgers since 2014 (Drew Butera).
- He is the first position player in history to allow a walk-off homerun.
- The last time Kikè was officially a pitcher was when he was 12 years old.
The Dodgers lost, 7-4.
Enough said, because even as an armchair spectator, six hours of baseball wears you out.
The Dodgers finish the series with the Phillies later this morning. Game time is 9:35 am, PST.
