Game 52, 5/22/2024: Dodgers 0, Diamondbacks 6

CHAVEZ RAVINE, CA —
Yet again, it was all D-Backs in this one as they took the rubber match by blanking the powerhouse Dodgers lineup with a score of 6-0. Dodger hitters not hitting with RISP was again the gloomy cloud plaguing this lineup. Tyler Glasnow had another night of a questionable pitching performance by going 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, and 6 K.

Arizona broke through in the fifth inning with three runs, which was the most runs given up by Glasnow in a single inning all year. The struggling Corbin Carroll started the scoring for the Snakes by tripling in a pair of runs and a wild pitch allowed the third run to come across. The sixth saw Christian Walker again clobbering the Dodgers’ pitching with a home run to add on an extra insurance run. That’s the 14th home run for Walker at Chavez Ravine, more than any other visiting player in the last three years. The Dodgers have got to figure out a way to keep this guy in the yard.

Ketel Marte decided to add on a long ball of his own in the eighth to make it a 5-0 deficit for the Dodgers and yet another passed ball allowed the final run to score for Arizona. This is the Dodgers’ third shutout loss of the season.

The Dodgers had their chances in this one throughout the game. They had runners on base in each of the first six innings, including a couple of prime scoring chances early on, but just could not get a hit when it mattered. The team went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, which as been sort of standard operating procedure during this little lull for the offense. During the last two weeks, the team ranks near the bottom of the league with a paltry .636 OPS, good for 27th among 30 teams. For the season, the Dodgers rank only 12th in baseball with RISP, behind such offensive juggernauts as the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies. Suffice it to say if you are behind the Rockies in ANYTHING this season, you need to clean it up.

The last two games have both been like one horrendous flashback to the 2023 NLDS, and really serve as a warning to what October baseball might look like. The Dodgers could win 120 games this year, but if they don’t hit win it counts, there will be an early exit from the playoffs.

Off day tomorrow Dodger fans, phew, a much-needed one after 13 straight games. Nonetheless, the Dodgers are still in a good place in the NL West standings as they hold a 7.5-game lead over San Diego with a record of 33-19. LA will travel to Cincinnati to play a 3-game series starting on Friday at 4:10 PM PT. James Paxton will take the bump for the Dodgers and Graham Ashcraft for the Reds. Let’s Go Dodgers!
