Dodgers Recap: LA continues struggles as they drop series to NL-leading Pirates

Pittsburgh, PA — The Dodgers look to win back-to-back series for the first time in 2023 as Julio Urías takes the mound against the NL-leading Pittsburgh Pirates in a rubber match.

The Dodger’s offense got to work early with a leadoff walk by Mookie Betts and a single by Jason Heyward, who then proceeded to steal second base, giving David Peralta an early opportunity to provide LA with the lead with a two-RBI single. However, that would be the last we saw of the Dodgers’ offense for the day as Pirates’ starter Mitch Keller would settle in and throw five scoreless innings.

The Dodgers are missing Will Smith, Max Muncy, and J. D. Martinez, and it is undoubtedly showing this past series as they have struggled to score runs. On the pitching side, Urías struggled in the first inning, which has been his theme in the past. After giving up three runs in the first, Julio would settle in until a walk in the sixth inning would unravel the day as Urías would then proceed to give up a two-run home run to old friend Connor Joe. The Pirates would add another run off another long ball ending Julio Urías’s day.

The Dodgers also continue to struggle to hold the runners on, allowing three more stolen bases which seem to be a massive problem in LA this season. The Dodgers lose today’s game on a 6-2 final score as they head back to LA and prepare to host the St. Louis Cardinals and Philidelphia Phillies.
