Dodgers Recap: Gonsolin makes 2023 debut, but Dodgers fall to Pirates

Pittsburgh, PA — The Dodgers looked to extend their win streak to four games on Wednesday night as Tony Gonsolin made his 2023 season debut after suffering an ankle injury in spring training. Manager Dave Roberts stated that the Dodgers were looking for Gonsolin to get to around 3-4 innings as he was not fully built up before Michael Grove‘s injury in Chicago. Gonsolin did just that, going three and a third giving up two hits and no runs.

However, Pirates Roansy Contreras matched Gonsolin’s pitch for pitch throwing six shutout innings while only allowing two hits. For the Dodgers, it is the same story on a different day with an inconsistent offense. Granted, the Dodgers are missing Max Muncy and J. D. Martinez, but there are no excuses after the team dropped eight runs in yesterday’s comeback win. The Dodgers’ lone run came off a Freddie Freeman solo home run in the eighth inning as the Pirates dominated them all night.

The Pirates have been firing on all cylinders as of late and took advantage of the Dodgers’ poor defense, with balls falling between Mookie Betts, Jason Heyward, and Miguel Vargas in the seventh inning. The Dodgers also continue to struggle to hold runners on, and the Pirates took advantage of that by stealing five more bases tonight.

The Dodgers will turn to Julio Urías tomorrow in the rubber match as they look for their first back-to-back series win of the 2023 season.

Tony’s back…
