Dodgers News: Graterol shut down from baseball activities

Stephen Brashear-USA TODAY Sports

Prior to the start of the second game against the Washington Nationals, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that right-handed relief pitcher Brusdar Graterol had been shut down from throwing and had not picked up a baseball in over a week.

The Dodgers bullpen has pitched a MLB leading 107.1 innings so far in 2024 and the bullpen is starting to show the cracks as the Dodgers try and recall any available arms they have the past few weeks.

A silver lining to this mess was the potential return of not only Graterol but also right-handed flame thrower Blake Treinen, who has been out with his own shoulder injury woes since 2022.

Blake Treinen started his rehab assignment in Albuquerque, and he gave up 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning. The Graterol news came during today’s pre-game huddle and puts the Dodgers in a tough spot in terms of bullpen construction over the next few weeks.

In 2023, Graterol was one of the best relief pitchers in baseball, posting a 1.20 ERA in 67.1 innings for the Dodgers.

While Graterol has the skills to be a high-percentage strikeout pitcher, the right-handed flamethrower has struggled to put the ball past the barrel, a downward trend that continued in 2023.

Graterol, in his rookie year during the 2019 season, posted a 9.3 K/9, which has gone down each season to a career-low 6.4 in 2023.

Despite all that, Graterol found his rhythm with his sinker, which allowed him to limit baserunners and get out of traffic.
