Shoddy Defense and Poor Pitching Sink Dodgers in Loss to Reds

…And not to mention the loss was to the last place, already eliminated, 62-83 Reds.

Okay, got that off my chest.

The Dodgers continued a boom/bust theme Monday, even though it had the makings of a boom in the first inning for L.A.. The Dodgers loaded up the bases but failed to get any runners across.

The Reds struck hard in the bottom of the first, getting four runs as pitcher Alex Wood struggled with command and velocity and ended up going only 3 2/3 innings. A dropped ball at what could/should have been a good if not great play at home by Yasmani Grandal allowed the bleeding to continue later in the game.

The Dodgers chipped away at the deficit, and it looked like Yasiel Puig was set to be the man of the hour in the late innings. With one out and bases loaded in the seventh, Puig fouled off seven pitches from Reds reliever Jared Hughes, one of which missed being an extra-bases hit down the third base line, foul by inches.

Yet lady luck wasn’t having it, and Puig lasered a line-drive right to the glove of Eugenio Suarez, who easily got the ball to second base, turning two to end the inning.

The Dodgers lost, 10-6.

The Dodgers are 1.5 games out of first. Colorado pummeled the D-backs Monday night to widen their lead by a game with the Dodger’s loss.

The Dodgers look to bounce back today against the Reds. Game time today is 3:40 pm, PST.
