Sad news in the Dodgers Family: Sandra Scully, the wife of beloved Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, has passed away after a battle with ALS. According to a statement released by the team on Monday, Sandra passed away on Sunday at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. She and Vin had been married since 1973.

Sandi Scully was born December 27, 1944 in Cascade, Virginia. After the tragic passing of Vin’s first wife Joan in 1972, Vin and Sandi were married the following year. In their 47 years of marriage, together they basked in family life, raising six children in a blended family, who in turn blessed them with 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Upon hearing of the death of Sandi Scully, Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten said the following in a team statement: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Sandi Scully, the loving wife of Vin and a dear member of the Dodger family. Sandi was Vin’s biggest fan and was always there in loving support of him at Dodger Stadium until she began her battle with ALS. She was truly Vin’s and the Scully family’s rock, and she will be dearly missed.”

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive nervous system disease that causes loss of muscle control. The Scully family wanted to thank Dodger fans for their thoughts and prayers, and suggested that in lieu of flowers, a donation in Sandi’s name to  the Department of Neuromuscular Disease at UCLA/ALS Research would be appreciated.

Vin is a person of strong religious faith and has said in the past that it has been that faith that has allowed him to continue in the face of personal tragedies. We at Dodgersbeat wish Vin and his family peace and comfort at what must be a difficult time for all.
