Dodgers Opinion: Did Gavin Stone’s strong spring earn him more than just the 5th spot?

via MLB.com

During the Korean Series, it was announced that Gavin Stone would be the Dodgers’ number 5 starter. Looking at the numbers, I ask the question, who should really be the number 5 starter?

In 2023, Gavin Stone and Bobby Miller made their MLB debuts. Miller performed, and Stone did not. When Stone was sent back down to OKC, he started working on adding 2-3 more pitches to his mix. After hard off-season work and adding muscle, Stone came into the Dodgers 2024 spring training a totally different pitcher.

Stone’s 2024 spring training numbers are good: 3W / 0.93ERA / 9.2IP / 9SO / .161AVG / 0.62WHIP. Monday morning, in the Korean National team game, Stone relieved Miller after the fifth inning. Stone took the mound in the sixth and dominated with 3.1IP / 0H / 0ER / 1BB / 6K / 0.00 ERA.

Let’s take a look at Bobby Miller‘s numbers in the Dodgers 2024 spring training and his start against the Korean National team.

Miller’s 2024 spring training numbers were 0W/1L/4.32ERA/8.1IP/11SO/.207AVG/1.02WHIP. He started game two against the Korean National team. After five innings, Miller ended the day with 5IP / 5H / 2R / 2ER / 6K / 3.60ERA.

For the most part, Miller has worked on his frustration issues from last year and still has a 100+ mph fastball, but I want to pose the question. With the numbers presented, should Miller start in the number three spot, or should Stone be moved up?
