LOS ANGELES, CA — If I had told you in April that Walker Buehler and Blake Treinen would go down, and the Dodgers would still win the NL West, you probably could have believed it. But if I told you Buehler and Treinen would be gone and the Dodgers would have the best pitching staff in the game, you’d probably think I was trying to sell you a bill of goods. But that is exactly what happened. And it wasn’t even particularly close. The Dodgers’ 2.80 team ERA was the best in baseball, a fact that shows up all over the leaderboards in the sport. In our last post, we look at how the Dodger hitters ranked. Now, let’s take a look at the pitchers.

Bullpen ERA (minimum 40 IP)

  1. Craig Kimbrel 22 (7th in NL)
  2. Daniel Hudson 5 (27th in NL)
  3. Brusdar Graterol, 4 (31st in NL)

This season was a year of happy surprises, coupled with frustrations. Who thought that Tyler Anderson would be as good as he’s been? Who had the quantum leap from Tony Gonsolin on their Bingo card? Yency Almonte? Evan Phillips? Are you kidding me? So for every gray hair that we got watching Kimbrel struggle through the 9th, we have to keep in mind that his staff is way better than any of us ever expected. And that, more than anything, gives me some peace of mind heading into the next three weeks.
